Lyrics Born collaboration with The Bamboos
I love The Bamboos – awesome Aussie funk group – and heard about their collaboration with Lyrics Born from California on the radio the other night. Just had a chance to listen to it. Good track, soulful, works well … although I thought it was a little repetitive; could have been trimmed by at least 30 seconds or built up towards the end, though it’s saved by the two-stage breakdown at 1:50 and 2:45. Anyway, I still like it!

Thumbs up for Muse’s new album The Resistance

I’m a big fan of Muse. I have Showbiz, Origin of Symmetry, Hullabaloo Soundtrack, Absolution, Black Holes and Revelations, their live 2004 Absolution Tour DVD and now their latest 2009 release The Resistance.
It took me a while to come around to liking their previous 2006 album Black Holes and Revelations. My initial impression with BH&R was that the band had plateaued and were now just a bland, commercial pop-rock group focussed on selling quantity rather than sticking to their we-don’t-care-if-you-like-us experimental progressive, space-rock. After listening to BH&R about a dozen times I finally realised that they hadn’t sold out. They were starting to poke at something new, a new sound.
That new sound has three years later matured and become Muse’s latest album The Resistance.

The Flying Colours tour kicked off here in Canberra at the ANU Refractory last night with of course Bliss n Eso headlining but supported by a number of other Australian hip-hop groups including Pez, 360, DJ Matik and Diafrix.

Cog, Canberra 27 May
The Hellenic Club in Canberra is a bit of an odd venue for a rock gig, but as Flynn explained the band just wanted to try something different from performing at the local universities. Fair enough. I didn’t particular like the venue choice but the performance itself was of course awesome.

twitterRAGE community music video channel
You may have noticed this new thing called twitterRAGE being mentioned on Twitter recently. What is it? The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) have a music video show called rage – and basically a bunch of “tweeps” (Twitter users) including @misswired @barrysaunders @ApostrophePong myself and others have a shared account on YouTube twitterrage where we collect and make available through a playlist our favourite music videos and tracks for people to listen to … basically a community-programmed web version of the ABC’s rage show.

Jamendo: Free music
I had to find some music yesterday morning to play before and after the speeches at the rally in Canberra yesterday against the Government’s mandatory Internet filtering proposal which I was an organiser of … and I didn’t want to get into the whole paying APRA/AMCOS royalties thing or illegally play licensed music in a public place – so I needed to find some free music.

Worst recent music video?
I’m voting The Bird and the Bee “Polite Dance Song” as worst music video that’s in high rotation at the moment. I’m not sure if my extreme dislike for the video is because of it’s insipidity or slight freakishness – but it just distresses me.

Wiley – Summertime
Love it or hate it? I think Daft Punk deserves more respect than Wiley has given them with his extensive sampling of Aerodynamic … well it’s not even sampling, it’s more just singing over the top of the track and then trying to make it better! No, you don’t try and improve on Daft Punk. I’ll listen to it rather than change the radio station but I’m not impressed.

Jye put the call out a little while ago for people to send in music for reviewing, and Julian Rapp from Friendship Records was one of those who answered the call.

My band’s first gig
First of all a big thanks to Jye for inviting me to contribute to The Music Blogs and it’s been awesome to see how popular the blog has been since being formally launched only a few weeks ago.

Nathanael’s favourite album: Speakers and Tweeters
Speakers and Tweeters by UK group Dub Pistols has been a favourite of mine for quite a few months now possibly odd considering dub isn’t a genre I have many albums from – mostly d&b, house, rock & metal – but it’s a great album to chill back to; I can listen to it over and over again and never get sick of it.

Zoom H2 handheld audio recording
I had been keen on getting a Zoom H4 when the Zoom H2 was announced last year. The feature list, size and price was too good to pass on so I pre-ordered one from the USA and got it months before it landed here on shelves in Australia. Continue reading →

Soon the recorded music industry becomes the performing music industry
An excellent article written in 2007 by owner of Littoral Records, Alan Jones that looks at the decline of the traditional business and marketing model of big record labels and predicts they’ll be run down and overtaken by smaller, more agile, responsive and smarter labels.
