After retuning from overseas, I was delighted to find three boxes in my front room all labeled Sonos. I’d never seen the technology before, but was excited to hear about what it could do.
Unboxing the two players “ZonePlayer S5″ and the hub “ZoneBridge” and flicking through the instructions leaflet, I quickly realised how simple this was going to be to set-up. With the control app downloading on my iPhone (which as the demo explains, you can control all the rooms in your house from your iPhone) I began the set-up. For me, it’s bedroom and home office.
Okay. Boxes open and Players set, and hub connected to the wireless router. Very easy. While the set-up is running on my MacBook Pro I’m thinking about how useful these might be back at the office with the various music tastes often uh, clashing. Not only can you run your own tunes, but you can dial in to any digital radio station across the globe.
Which I guess for me has always been my problem with digital radio. Until we are giving better access, then it’s going to be difficult to get adoption. Okay, and in 30 minutes I’m set-up. Hub, players, iPhone App, desktop install and now trying to find the music library.
Registered for some updates, and that seems to be taking a little while longer. Ah well. actually, it took another 20 minutes at least.
But wow. Not often stuff feels like magic anymore. But something about this does. Very cool not to have your phone stuffed in a dock, and you can perfectly control volume and music from anywhere, to any room in the house. Very clear, and very strong range of music. I’m running everything from dubstep, to heavy metal, to gangster rap. Captures it all perfectly.
Dropping some romantic/classical on now, and I think that’s where I am enjoying it most, because it sounds like how this feels – very, very free.
This will change house parties. This will change home audio.
Very impressed. This is only day one – will report back soon.
