The guys from Melbourne based Way With Words are a great example of how young music talent just needs a ‘push’ in the right direction and they can flourish! Way With Words are Joey Cirillo (vocals), Luke Mann (guitars), Dylan Giannakopoulos (guitars), Sam Berry (bass) and Jack Nicholls (drums) and these kids won the 2010 Red Bull Bedroom Jam.
Their music stood out amongst the dozens of other bands that entered the competition last year and, since then, they’ve been hitting the big time. They’ve recently returned from recording their debut EP at the Red Bull Studio in LA and we’ve been following their progress since they broke through and won the competition. Now, the rest of 2011 and beyond, is brighter than ever four this gang of outstanding teen music talent.
Joey, Luke, Dylan, Sam and Jack were good enough to let us shoot a few questions at them about their experience in LA and what they’re looking at doing next. Here’s what they had to say
What were the top three most memorable moments from your trip to LA and why?
The first would have to be the King Kong 4D experience at Universal Studios. It was such an amazing tour and we actually felt like we were in the middle of the forest watching King Kong fighting a dinosaur. The second really memorable thing about LA was easily the Red Bull Studio and office. We had never seen an office that is basically a massive skate park with table tennis and pool tables all around the building. And the studio… where do we even start! The people there are incredible, the equipment is incredible and it just makes for such an amazing experience. Finally, the third very memorable thing about LA would have to be Venice Beach. It wasn’t like any other beach in Australia. The sand just seemed to go on forever and ever and so did the market stalls.
Did you find some new musical inspiration during your trip to LA?
Our trip to LA gave us all a taste of what a life of music could be like. Not only did we get to live like a rockstar for a while but we also got to do something we loved with our best friends. This inspiration of being a full time musician was shaped, not just by a great experience in LA, but also by meeting people who are well known in the music industry. These people included our sound engineers at the studio – James & Eric – and also all the staff of Red Bull. These guys helped give us a really strong desire to work with quality people all of the time. I know that, as a band, we’ll continue to work as hard as possible to keep the dream alive and be inspired by music and what it has to offer.
Has the Bedroom Jam and LA trip changed your perception of the music industry? What’s different?
Since going on the trip and coming back to Australia, we’ve all learned lots about the industry and making music. The biggest thing we have learned is that you have to take every opportunity you are given and make the most of it. Hard work and determination really does pay off eventually and we saw this while we were in the studio in America. We had to work really hard in the studio to get the songs completed – so much so that we were recording up until about three hours before our flight left just to get everything down! Being in a professional studio was also a huge learning experience for us. Working with the engineers in there taught us some industry secrets which have come in handy since then! Through the whole competition we really worked hard and it’s paid off for us. All that needs to be done now is to continue the momentum we have had and make the most of the incredible chances that have been given to us by Red Bull through the Bedroom Jam.
What’s next for Way With Words? What are your plans for the next year or so?
So far we have a few gigs lined up and we’re always trying to book more and more!! We’ve also just received the first draft of our EP artwork, which we’re all really happy with. As soon as we finish that up we’re going to start printing some CDs! We’re also starting to organise our EP launch so we can finally get our tracks that we recorded in the Red Bull studio in LA out there. Hopefully we’ll be gigging a lot too, and maybe even do some travelling around Australia to get our name heard more. We’re also writing more, so we’ll be playing some new tracks in a few shows’ time, which we’re all pretty excited about. We’re also looking to do some more recording which everyone will hopefully be able to hear in the next few months!! Apart from that we’re just trying to push ourselves further and further into the music scene.
You can support the guys online by checking out their Facebook, MySpace or Twitter. Also, they’re looking to launch their EP very shortly, so, if you loved their work as part of the Red Bull Bedroom Jam, keep an eye out for that too.
