Selected Jerks (2001-2009)
You may, or rather should have met Kimberley Isaac Moyes through his
role in the classic dance dandy duo The Presets. Aside from holding it
down producing and playing some of the most electrifying modern dance
music in recent years with his brother in arms Julian Hamilton, Kim
has all the while been quietly toiling away on an array of wondrous
solo experiments that have slowly seen release in limited and eclectic
fashion.
Selected Jerks 2001-2009 perfectly encapsulates the gamut of musical
and personal evolution that Kim has run, from the wide-eyed boy fresh
from music school in 2001, through the thrilling trajectory his day
job in The Presets has taken since beginning in 2003, on to his
current role, as a kind of modern day rave patron.
Produced in the same said time period, Selected Jerks 2001-2009 acts
as a musical clearing of the slate, a collection of nine years of
artistic exploration bundled up and set loose, paving way for future
expeditions deep into inner and outer space. Deep into the rave cave.
The sounds too capture a kind of Jekyll and Hyde personality at work
over the years, with those tracks obviously aimed squarely at the
dancefloor perfectly offset by a series of wistfully melancholy,
downbeat dreamsuites. Tracks like Wet ‘n Wild and Fistogram still
sound perfectly primed for any discerning dancefloor, and added to
these monsters is an updated version of System Breakdown and a
brilliantly brutal minimal techno number called No Imagination that
perfectly exemplifies one side of Kim today.
On the flipside is the more downtempo, curious side to Kim’s work,
from the spastic drum machine meltdown of Tools Of The Trade, the
open-field lope of Gold Rush and Tired Of Wasting, the misty eyed
romanticism of Be Home Soon, and the stunningly mesmerizing atmosphere
of Out Here In The Stratosphere. Combined, these two seemingly
disparate approaches make for a beautifully balanced overview of one
individual’s musical landscape.
From previous releases on Cutters, Bang Gang 12″s, Japanese label
Rallye and of course Modular, Selected Jerks 2001-2009 collects the
known party starters alongside some stunning reworks by the likes of
Midnight Juggernauts, Tomboy, Bag Raiders and more.
Selected Jerks 2001-2009 will hit stores, of the bricks and mortar and
digital kind, on October 30. KIM will also be taking on a national DJ
tour in support of this musical clearing of the slate, dates below
