Music videos that disturbed me as a child

Judy just loves Mr Squiggle

In between Skate 2000 and head-butting my brother, I spent most of my early years watching Video Hits and Rage. For better or for worse? You be the judge…

1. “The Power and the Passion” by Midnight Oil (1983) – emulating Peter Garrett’s dance moves at my primary school discos did nothing to improve my street cred. Formerly known as “the fat kid”, from that point on I was referred to as “the fat kid who can’t dance.”

2. “Go West” by the Pet Shop Boys (1993) – block-colour outfits and a never ending staircase. Profligate use of primary colours and way too many biblical appropriations. Criminal cover.

3. “Tomorrow” by silverchair (1995) – horrifying Pig/Man with a bowlcut grins from his throne and takes a bath, then eats a stack of coins.

4. “Breathe” by the Prodigy (1996) – bugs crawl around a dirty sink while an alligator warms up the bed and a centipede slithers across a book. As an obsessive-compulsive ten-year-old with a fear of cockroaches that still exists today, I was terrified.

5. “The Dope Show” by Marilyn Manson (1998) – as I reached the brink of puberty, Manson’s white latex full-body paint and prosthetic rubber breasts did nothing to calm the uneasiness I felt over my rapidly changing body. Plus he had red eyes. Creepy.

  1. I remember my Brother being terrified about viewing Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ video for the first time. He has refused to watch it since, despite the fact he is now 26 years old.

  2. I definitely see where you’re coming from with the Dope Show.. great song… bloody freaky film clip! As for Midnight Oil, I would personally look forward to seeing ‘the fat kid’ dance like that! :)

  3. Breathe use to make me anxious too. But for Marilyn Manson it’d have to be their cover of “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of These)” – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pdf1Q5__uvg

  4. Jye – oh god! That’s fucking awful! THEY SMASHED THE GUITAR. *sobs*

  5. Faith No More – Ashes To Ashes! In fact my skin is crawling right now just remembering it. I was an insomniac as a teenager, so Rage was the highlight of my life… i’d put a towel under my door so my parents couldn’t see the light from my tiny black and white tv… and i’d watch Rage all Fri & Sat night while wearing earphones. Some clips still stick in my head.
