Shoot The Player

“… I usually don’t do things like these but since you want to make something beautiful, I’m in… ”

And so begins the journey of the latest Shoot The Player film with Swedish musician, the Tallest Man on Earth.

Shoot The Player is a website dedicated to making single shot music videos of singer-songwriters on the streets of our town, Sydney.  I’ve been following the site for a while now, ever since a friend of mine was in a video himself, and I’m never disappointed by the injection of inspiration I get from each new upload.

Based on The Take Away Shows, a site with the same concept in Paris, Shoot The Player houses the kind of intimate and relaxed atmosphere that we seldom see in music videos these days.  Not distinguishing between when the musician is fixing his hair, the accompanying chit chat pre-shoot and when he’s calmly singing to his small audience of a cameraman and sound-lady, Shoot The Player offers us a rare insight into musicians just as they are: as a rising star and as a human.

In the latest upload with the Tallest Man on Earth singing “Where Do My Bluebird Fly?” at Sydney Harbour, there’s an eloquence to the film that still resonates with me now… I’m not sure if it’s because Kristian’s all black attire and country-ish walk is reminiscent of Johnny Cash, or because of the back-drop of lapping water and tourists in awe, but this film is a great one to start your Shoot The Player trip on.

And make sure you watch it ‘till the end… there’s an image in this one that’s the cherry on the cake.
